In November 2007, Yasco Horsman, John Heijmans, and Marcel Cobussen founded the study group WAC (Werkgroep Auditieve Cultuur). Besides seminars every other week in which relevant and up-to-date literature will be discussed, the idea is to organize a (modest) conference, to prepare a publication, and to formulate a research proposal. In May 2008, Jeroen Groenewegen joined the WAC. We started by reading Hearing Cultures edited by Veit Erlmann, continued with Martin Jay's "Scopic Regimes of Modernity" (in Vision and Visuality edited by Hal Foster), and are currently discussing R. Murray Schafer's The Soundscape.
From February 2009 on, Marcel Cobussen will start a
undergraduate course on Auditory Culture at Leiden University (for more
information, see courses).
